Ellen van Neerven

Ellen van Neerven was born in Brisbane and is of Mununjali and Dutch descent. Her first book, the David Unaipon award-winning Heat and Light, was published by UQP in 2014. She was awarded a Queensland Writers Fellowship to write her next book Days of Extinction in 2015. Ellen works as an editor at the State Library of Queensland as part of the black&write! Indigenous writing and editing project.

In this special instalment of the Kill Your Darlings First Book Club, author Ellen van Neerven will discuss her acclaimed debut book, Heat and Light. Learn about Ellen’s writing process, the inspiration behind her stunning stories, and her path to publication. Ellen will be in conversation with Kill Your Darlings’ Online Editor Veronica Sullivan, and viewers are invited to join the First Book Club by reading Heat and Light, and tweeting questions for Ellen during the event. This intimate discussion is a chance to delve deep into the world of Heat and Light, which Melissa Lucashenko described as ‘a stunning debut from a young writer of immense potential.’

Presenting The Stella Prize Longlist

The 2015 Stella Prize Longlist will be announced on Thursday 12th February. Just a few days later, a selection of the longlisted authors will join the Digital Writers’ Festival to read from their remarkable books.
