Writers' Night School

Stella Prize Reviewing Masterclass

This event has already finished!

The Stella Prize Reviewing Masterclass is an invaluable opportunity for emerging reviewers and books writers to hone their craft, under the guidance of two of Australia’s most respected literary critics.

Over the two sessions of the Reviewing Masterclass, participants will engage with approaches and theories underpinning literary criticism, and be given a thorough grounding in the practical skills necessary to write reviews for publication, including tone, content, angles, editing, and pitching processes.

The first class will be led by Jo Case on Friday 13 February. Jo is senior writer/editor at the Wheeler Centre and former books editor at the Big Issue. The second class will be led by Melinda Harvey on Friday 20 February. Melinda is a Melbourne-based book critic, and has lectured on English literature at several universities.

Participants will be provided with a copy of a book of their choice from the Stella Prize Longlist (announced Thursday 12 February). By the close of the Digital Writers’ Festival, participants will be expected to produce a substantial review of their chosen book, giving them the chance to apply the lessons of the Masterclass in practice. All participants will receive individual feedback on their review from Melinda or Jo.

The Stella Reviewing Masterclass offers a rare chance to gain personal and practical insight into the art of writing book reviews and literary criticism.

Presented in partnership with The Stella Prize.

PLEASE  NOTE: THIS EVENT IS IN TWO PARTS. The first class runs February 13th, and the second runs on February 20th. You only need to buy one ticket, which is valid for both events.

In 2012 she was an inaugural Hot Desk Fellow at the Wheeler Centre. She lectures in literary studies and creative writing at Monash University.

Jo Case

Jo Case is senior writer/editor at the Wheeler Centre.

Her first book, Boomer and Me: A memoir of motherhood, and Asperger’s is published by Hardie Grant in Australia and the UK.

She has worked in books since she exchanged her job as a Target check-out chick for one in a bookshop, aged 17, and she works part-time at Sun Bookshop in Yarraville.

Most recently, she worked for Readings Books, Music & Film, where she edited their newsletter, Readings Monthly. She has been deputy editor of Australian Book Review, books editor of the Big Issue and associate editor of Kill Your Darlings. She once took a ‘gap year’ working in corporate public relations.

In her spare time, she enjoys doing exactly what she does for a living (reading and writing), only with no deadlines.
